Talanta took an early lead but failed to hold onto it, allowing the Slum Boys to fight back and claim a vital victory.

Mathare United displayed a spirited fight and bounced back to register a 3-2 victory over Talanta at Police Pavillion Stadium in South B.

After going down 2-0, the Slum Boys were not demotivated and kept fighting, eventually emerging as victors in the charged midweek encounter.

Talanta were the first side to break the deadlock when Alex Luganji scored a ninth-minute goal.

The away side took advantage of Mathare’s inability to settle fast and added their second goal in the 18th minute. This time, it is Augustine Kuta who scored as Talanta relentlessly attacked from all sides.

The Slum Boys stabilized and ventured forward and, in the 28th minute, pulled one back. Their star boy, Daniel Otieno, struck, and the goal rejuvenated them to go for more.

The 2008 Premier League made their first change in the 46th minute with Meshack Muyonga, who joined in mid-season, paved the way for Ronald Shichenje. The substitute is also among the new signings at the club.

Three minutes after the change, Mathare equalized when Curtis Wekesa’s curled effort found the back of the net with Shichenje providing the assist.

Geoffrey Lemu, who earned his first start in Mathare colours since his arrival, was yellow-carded in the 68th minute.

Talanta capitulated further when they allowed the Eastland side to score the third goal through Douglas Kibet. A change – that saw Kibet replace Baron Oketch in the 79th minute – turned out to be a massive masterstroke by the coach.

In order to protect their slim lead, Mathare withdrew Otieno and brought on midfielder Derrick Ikholi.

The points are vital for the Slum Boys as they fight to move further away from the danger zone as the loss leaves Talanta just above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, new signings ensured Kakamega Homeboyz defeated Posta Rangers in another top-flight match played at Kasarani.

Felicien Okandaa scored his first competitive goal for Homeboyz in the 17th minute before Enock Agwanda converted a penalty before the halftime break for an eventual 2-0 victory.
