However, according to a former coach close to Mbappe, the issues lie not only with the player but also with Real Madrid’s squad, particularly the midfielders tasked with supporting him.
Coach close to Mbappe diagnoses subpar Real Madrid form
With seven goals in 12 LaLiga matches and just one in five Champions League outings, the forward has fallen short of the lofty expectations placed on him.
While Mbappe has delivered moments of brilliance, his performances have lacked consistency, and his struggles were once again evident in Real Madrid’s recent Champions League defeat against Liverpool, where the forward missed a penalty and was largely ineffective.
The ex-coach, speaking to L’Equipe, attributed Mbappe’s challenges to the composition of Real Madrid’s midfield, saying, "Reviving him won’t be easy.
"First, because he plays on a team that does not rotate. Then, because in this same team, the midfielder is not up to standard."
Bellingham, other Real Madrid midfielders criticised for Mbappe’s form
Speaking further, the unnamed coach mentioned names as he elaborated on his criticism of the Real Madrid team.
“Mbappe needs partners who prepare his actions, like Neymar or [Marco] Verratti did in Paris, or [Antoine] Griezmann in the France team.
“Who at Real, currently, can do it? [Toni] Kroos was not replaced. [Luka] Modric no longer has the same legs. [Aurelien] Tchouameni and [Eduardo] Camavinga are not passers. [Jude] Bellingham? I'm not convinced. He's not Neymar anyway," he said.
Despite the criticism, Mbappe remains a focal point of Carlo Ancelotti’s attack, and the Real Madrid manager has called for patience as he adapts to the team’s style.
However, the stakes are high, and Los Blancos will be counting on their marquee signing to deliver when they face Getafe in La Liga.
