The Northern Irishman's future was cast in doubt after it appeared that K'Ogalo were throwing away the title but silenced his doubters on the final day

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry is determined to help his side achieve more success after delivering the club’s 20th league title last week.

McKinstry, who had been labeled a 'plumber' by some skeptical supporters after it looked as if the club would miss out on the title, discussed the pressures of making the club return to the dominant force it had been for a long time after falling short in the last couple of years.

The club was massively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent FIFA transfer ban imposed on them in 2021, which affected their squad building process.

The Northern Irish tactician, who was appointed in 2022, has delivered the title under difficult conditions, only being able to make signings in March after their transfer ban was lifted.

“Look at the number of supporters that turned up (at Kasarani Stadium). Tens of thousands of fans want to witness their club win. I have been all over the world and been to all these kinds of environments before," McKinstry said.

“You never knew the results. We have had games where we have played fantastic football and not got the result and other games where we have played pretty horrible football but gotten all the three points. For us, it is always a count in the background.

“If you speak to supporters about top coaches like Mikel Arteta or even David Moyes at West Ham, he did a fantastic job there, but at the start of the season maybe what he was doing went under criticism.

“In this industry, you just have to keep working hard, do your best and hopefully get days like these because most coaches never get these days.”

After Kakamega Homeboyz shocked Gor 3-2 during the penultimate game of the season, putting their potential title win in jeopardy, rumours swirled around on the club going through a crisis meeting with regards to his future at the club. Quizzed on what went on, the 37-year-old tactician insisted that meetings at the club “happen on a regular basis”.

“I did read that article on a crisis meeting. We have meetings on a regular basis. We knew what we had to do and we knew it was in our hands. Over the course of 34 games, we've been the best team in the league. No doubt about that,” McKinstry said.

“The boys need to enjoy the moment and their holidays. Pre-season starts in four weeks before we kick on again.”
