McKinstry. who is set to leave Gor Mahia when his contract expires at the end of June, has revealed the transfer strategy the club will take which will make them do well in the Champions League next season.
Outgoing Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry believes the club can make history by becoming the first ever Kenyan team to achieve Champions League group stage qualification if something specific is adhered to.
McKinstry delivered the club’s second league title in a row but will be leaving on a permanent basis to fully focus on his Gambia national team commitments.
The club are now in the process of hiring a new coach, who will be tasked with helping the club try and make strides in continental football next year.

Gor Mahia official addresses logistical fiasco that threatens CAF Champions League participation
Administrative hinderances cost the team a place among Africa's elite last season.
They will take part in the CECAFA Kagame Cup and then the Nigeria invitational tournament in July and August to help them prepare for the big task at hand. McKinstry has now opined how the club can be strong enough for next season
“The team can compete. The first thing people need to understand on the continental is that the landscape has changed significantly,” McKinstry told Citizen TV.
“No Kenyan team has ever got to the group stages of the champions league. Should Geoffrey (Ochieng’ and co) leave and for that achievement, it will be something for the history books. We should not belittle that challenge, which is huge for the guys.”
McKinstry believes an organised approach to recruitment in the transfer window, with players signed to suit his successor’s preferred setup without destablising the spine he has left, will be the only way to achieve that dream.

COSAFA: Harambee Stars coach lauds special qualities Teddy Akumu brought to side despite being dropped from final squad
Akumu was surprisingly left out of the final Harambee Stars squad for the upcoming COSAFA tournament despite being a key player for the national team.
“The team is compact and close. Naturally in every transfer window, everyone likes to see signings. Supporters and Journalists love transfer deadline days.
“A team likes three or four new additions, but not 10, because 10 new additions destablise a team for a period of time.
“When you are going into Champions League qualification games, you want stability, not destability.
“We want good players in every department, defence, midfield and attack - you want competition for places- and I am sure the club will bring in a few.
“I know some names that are potentially joining and I know the team will be stronger next year. “
