Homeboyz will play either AFC Leopards or Bandari in the last four

Kakamega Homeboyz brought their A game into 2023 Mozzartbet Cup quarterfinal fixture and walloped Kariobangi Sharks 6-1 to book a place in the semifinal where they will either play AFC Leopards or Bandari.

Homeboyz scored three times in each half with Vincent Ogolla helping himself to a second half brace as the colorless Kariobangi Sharks got a man sent off.

It was an afternoon William Muluyha’s Kariobangi Sharks will want to forget, as they were ruthlessly punished by a rampant  Homeboyz in a one-sided encounter.

Just a week after losing 3-1 to the Kakamega based outfit, Sharks could not find answers to tame their problems. Not even the returning defender and captain, Kevin Luke Otiala could find a way to mitigate Patrick Odhiambo’s charges.

Sharks were constantly on the backfoot from the beginning of the match, constantly being vulnerable to waves of attacks both from open play and set-piece situations, with keeper Kevin Ouru’s goal constantly being peppered with shots.

Ouru’s heroics would not help much longer, and in the 37th minute, Homeboyz drew first blood through Hillary Otieno’s neat header, after Homeboyz turned over possession before leaving Otieno in a 1 v 3 situation, but still managed to overcome the barrier.

Sharks' day went from bad to worse just 2 minutes later through Kevin Amwayi.

The floodgates just could not be closed, and it was 3 just before the break, when Geofrey Onyango deflected ball into his own net after Kevin Mwai ran with the ball down the right flank before cutting it back for Sifuna Ambrose, whose shot got deflected by Onyango.

This forced Muluyha into making changes, forcing him into subbing off attacker Isaack Wasambo for Mathew Kibiwott just before the break.

In the second half, Sharks just could not get going, and Homeboyz were four to the good through Ogolla's first of the day.

Sharks had the opportunity to wipe their tears away through substitute Kevin Musamali  who would pull one back for the visitors, giving them a small glimmer of hope, but it was soon 5-1 for Homeboyz through Felicen Okanda.

Sharks would win a penalty of their own and had the chance to equalize through Tyson Otieno, but the former Wazito striker could not repeat his heroics from midweek as Homeboyz keeper Farouk Shikalo saved his penalty before showing his excellent reflexes on the rebound to keep the hosts 5-1 to the good.

Sharks’ mystery would continue to be compounded in the 79th minute, as it was soon 6 for the hosts through Ogolla's second of the game.

Speaking after the match, Homeboyz head coach Patrick Odhiambo was pleased with his side's performance.

" I am pleased with the performance my side showed today. I want to win this trophy and this was a statement of intent today," he said.
