After 25 years, Lionel Messi planned to return to his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys in Argentina before he retired.

Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi, is reportedly set to return to his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys after his contract with Inter Miami expires in December 2025.

Since joining Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, Messi has transformed the club's fortunes, leading them to their first-ever trophy and currently sitting atop the MLS standings.

However, his time with the American club is nearing its end as Messi has long expressed a desire to return to Newell's Old Boys, the club he left at the age of 13 to join Barcelona.

In an interview with El Planeta Urbano, he stated, "If I go back to Argentina tomorrow, which I would love, the club I would play for would be Newell's."

Despite missing a portion of the season due to an ankle injury, Messi has made a great impact for Inter Miami.

He scored twice within 30 minutes against Philadelphia Union as he contributed to his team's 3-1 victory.

With Inter Miami currently eight points clear at the top of the MLS standings, they are on track to secure the Supporters Shield before Messi's departure.

The Argentine legend's potential return to Newell's Old Boys would be a momentous occasion for the club and its fans.
