Former Welsh international Gareth Bale played 'Start, bench, sell,' with Messi and Ronaldo.

Former Tottenham star Gareth Bale weighed in on the GOAT debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in a unique way during a keep, sell, or bench game on a podcast.

The 33-year-old announced his retirement from football last year; however, in his playing days, he was teammates with Ronaldo at Real Madrid, and together, they won four Champions League titles.

What Bale said

The former Welsh international was a guest on a PlayStation show ahead of the London 2024 UEFA Champions League final when he was made to play the popular social media game of “Start, sell, bench.”

Three names were thrown to Bale to sort into either category: himself, Messi and Ronaldo. Bale immediately opted to bench the Argentine, keep himself on the bench, and sell his former teammate Ronaldo.

“Sell Messi because I’ll get most money for myself. I’m retired & not in shape so bench, I’ll start Ronaldo.”

The Welsh international went Ronaldo's way this round; however, throughout his career, he has typically avoided taking a firm stance in the GOAT debate.
