What Di Maria said
Di Maria’s retirement came after winning consecutively—with Messi and the rest of the Albiceleste squad, and after the triumph, he stated that the ex-Barcelona man was significantly ahead of Ronaldo in the GOAT debate because of his number of Ballon d'Or wins.
"In the end, the best is the one who has more Ballons d’Or, and Messi has eight. For me, therefore, there is some distance between him and Cristiano," he said, per Hindustan Times.
Messi currently has eight Ballon d'Or awards, three more than Ronaldo's five. He also became the most decorated footballer in history with his Copa America title, lending credence to Di Maria’s claim.
