Michael Kojo Essien, born in Accra, Ghana, to Aba Gyandoh and James Essien, began his football journey at Gomoa Nyanyano DC Primary and JSS.
He later attended St Augustine's College in Cape Coast and started his professional career with local club Liberty Professionals.
Essien, who grew up an Aston Villa fan, idolised Paul McGrath and modelled his playing style on the midfielder.
