The former Ghana national team captain Michael Essien faces financial woes as two of his properties are ordered for auction.

Former Ghana national team captain Michael Essien is in the midst of significant financial troubles as two of his properties are set to be auctioned off following a court directive.

Essien has been sanctioned by the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court's Commercial Division on June 12, 2024, involves properties located in prestigious areas of Accra, Ghana.

The properties facing sale are situated at Stephen Quarshie Crescent, East Legon, House Number 9, and House Number 204/205, Trassaco (Phase 2) Adjiringano as reported by Ghanaian publication, The Daily Guide Network.

Notably, one of these estates is valued between $20 million and $30 million, according to statements from the auctioneer who chose to remain unnamed.

This financial downturn comes despite Essien's successful football career which included stints at major European clubs and substantial earnings.

A Ghanaian journalist, Saddick Adams, provided insight into the situation, clarifying some misconceptions regarding Essien's financial commitments.

"It’s important to note that Michael Essien hasn’t taken out a loan. There’s been misinformation about him being indebted due to various loans, but in reality, it was a mortgage agreement signed during his playing days," Adams explained as reported by Ghanaweb.

He further detailed that Essien had been managing payments incrementally, "but eventually, payments lapsed, prompting the property owner or financing bank to reclaim the property."

Essien's journey from a budding talent at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup to a celebrated midfielder in Europe reflects a dazzling array of achievements interspersed with recent challenges.

He burst onto the scene with his performances in New Zealand, attracting European scouts' attention, which eventually led to a trial with Manchester United in 2000.

Although a work permit barrier prevented him from joining the English club, Essien moved to France where he signed with Bastia, making his league debut in September 2000.

His career trajectory took a significant upward turn when he joined Lyon in 2003, and subsequently moved to Chelsea where his trophy cabinet expanded to include the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield.

Despite such an illustrious career, Essien's post-retirement phase has been marred by these financial difficulties.

Essien also made memorable contributions to Ghana’s national team, appearing in the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, and retired from international football in 2018.
