Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was among the goals as Al Duhail secured victory in the Emir Cup Round of 16 to stay in contention for a trophy from a tough 2023-24 campaign.
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was on target as Al Duhail sailed through to the quarter-final of the Emir Cup following a 3-1 win over Al Shamal on Monday.
Olunga rounded off the scoring as Christophe Galtier’s men came from behind to secure the win and passage into the last eight of the competition which remains their only hope for silverware this season.
Former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho brought Al Duhail level on the stroke of halftime when he tucked home a penalty as both teams went into the break 1-1.

Blow for Harambee Stars & St Mirren as key striker is set for another spell on the sidelines
St Mirren will have to do without the Kenyan striker for the rest of the season while Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat will hope that he recovers before the World Cup qualifiers.
It took seven minutes after restart for Al Duhail to take the lead when Ismaiel Muhammad scored his side’s second goal. However, there was contention over the goal as the referee raised his flag for offside but a VAR check allowed it to stand.
Olunga then put the gloss on the score line with a third goal after capitalising on a mix up between the Al Shamal goalkeeper and his defenders.
In an attempt to play out from the back, the goalkeeper passed to his defender who failed to find the right pass, the ball falling to an Al Duhail player who headed it forward, catching the Al Shamal backline napping and Olunga pounced to roll it into an empty net.
Olunga has continued his fine scoring form even with his team’s poor campaign that saw them fail to defend their title and exit the Asian Champions League at the group stage.
The Emir Cup therefore presents them with an opportunity to win some silverware this season following a brilliant 2022-23 campaign that saw them claim three trophies while reaching the Champions League semi-final.
