Al Duhail's coach, Crespo, seeks improved performance in the Asian Champions League after Tuesday night draw.

Al Duhail coach Hernan Crespo has expressed his thoughts on his team's goalless draw against FC Istiklol in a Group E encounter of the Asian Champions League campaign, and his vision for the future as they strive for success in the tournament.

In a match where Kenyan international Michael Olunga did not take to the field, Crespo's squad grappled with a determined Istiklol side in a game that ended in a stalemate.

Despite creating some chances during the match, Al Duhail failed to capitalize on them as they had hoped.

"We could have played better, but we didn't. I don't want to make excuses, but we are still at the beginning of the season, and we will correct all the mistakes that appeared today," Crespo commented on the performance.

Al Duhail's Sultan al-Braik came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the game, but his attempt struck the post and bounced to safety. Istiklol's resolute defense ensured that Al Duhail's efforts from long range were largely ineffectual against goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov.

Crespo also acknowledged the challenges posed by Istiklol's defensive tactics, saying, "The opponent closed down the spaces, which greatly hindered the offensive movements of our players."

Despite the draw, Crespo expressed satisfaction with the presence of fans at the stadium, noting that their support serves as motivation for the players to deliver better performances in the future.

Looking ahead, Crespo anticipates the return of Michael Olunga in the upcoming match against Persepolis on September 2.

Olunga, who boasts an impressive record of 15 Champions League goals, including nine from last season, is set to play a pivotal role in Al Duhail's campaign.

With Edmilson Da Silva sidelined due to injury, Olunga has the opportunity to break records and become the club's top scorer.

The addition of Brazilian attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho to the team has further bolstered Al Duhail's ambitions. Crespo has high hopes that Coutinho will provide the creativity needed and potentially form a lethal partnership with Olunga.

Al Duhail reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in the previous season, and the pressure is on Crespo to guide his team to an even better performance this time.

However, they face tough competition in a challenging group that includes Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane-led Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia, as well as Persepolis FC from Iran.

This marks the 12th Champions League appearance for Al Duhail, who have been a consistent presence in the competition since the 2012-13 season.
