Harambee Stars will now shift focus to 2026 World Cup qualifiers after defeat to South Sudan.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has broken his silence following Kenya's disappointing 1-0 loss to South Sudan in an international friendly match played at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The defeat left fans shocked, especially since Kenya enjoyed a home-ground advantage and had recently triumphed over former FIFA World Cup hosts, Qatar.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric as loyal fans filled almost every seat, eagerly anticipating another victory.

However, their hopes were dashed as former Gor Mahia striker Tito Okello scored the only goal of the match, capitalising on an error in Kenya's defense.

South Sudan's resolute defense, coupled with their height advantage, denied Kenya the opportunity to equalise.

Olunga, Kenya's star striker, had a moment to redeem his team when he was brilliantly played through but failed to beat the oncoming South Sudan goalkeeper in the 63rd minute, leaving fans disappointed.

In response to the defeat, Olunga expressed his thoughts in a post on his social media handles two days after the loss, saying, "It's one of those days where the results are frustrating. We put in a lot of effort, but we fell short. I want to thank all Kenyans who showed us support. God bless."

Numerous fans responded to the post by offering support to the captain and giving hope in future national team assignments after a disappointing outing.

Despite this setback, Harambee Stars now shift their focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

They have been drawn into Group F, alongside Seychelles, Burundi, Gambia, Gabon, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The first leg of these qualifiers is scheduled to take place between November 13 and November 21, 2023.

The stakes are high in this competition, as the group winners will secure direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Additionally, the four best runners-up from the groups will advance to the CAF Play-Off tournament. The ultimate victor of this playoff will earn a coveted spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
