Milan secured a comfortable win over Lazio to revive their dying top four holes in Serie A
AC Milan blew the race for the top four places in Serie A wide open after securing a comfortable win over Lazio at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri’s 2-0 victory was a fair reflection of the game and they could have secured a larger victory over a hapless Lazio team that was there for the taking.
Two first-half goals from Ismael Bennacer and Theo Hernandez were enough for the 2021/22 Serie A champions to secure a crucial victory for their current season which has strengthened their case for a UEFA Champions League qualification berth.
How it happened
The fixture was billed as a crucial battle between two of the best teams in Italy, with the added incentive of a place in next season’s UCL up for grabs.
However, an injury-stricken Lazio did not come to the party and were thoroughly outclassed by their hosts in the match.
Despite losing Portuguese winger Rafael Leao to an injury, Milan still took an early lead after 17 minutes through Ismael Bennacer to set them on their way to complete dominance over Lazio.
After the early goal, Milan settled into the game, dictating the proceedings, and eventually got a second goal on the cusp of the half-hour mark as Theo Hernandez scored a sensational solo goal to make it 2-0 for the hosts.
Lazio went into the break with their tails between their legs, and it never came out as Milan continued their dominance in the second half.
Milan controlled the tempo of the game and ensured that their lead was in tact at full time, coming close to extending it when they had a goal ruled out for offside.
Lazio enjoyed a late flourish, but could not make it count as they failed to find a shot on target in the second 45 minutes, allowing Milan claim an easy 2-0 win.
