The game started with Milan struggling to find their rhythm, with Chukwueze and Abraham on the bench before injuries forced their substitutions earlier than expected.
However, Portuguese winger Rafael Leao broke the deadlock just before halftime with a stunning goal.
He received a perfectly weighted pass from Youssouf Fofana, controlled it expertly with a beautiful first touch, and slotted it past the onrushing goalkeeper from 15 yards out, giving Milan a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
Crvena Zvezda, with Peter Olayinka, responded strongly after the break. Nemanja Radonjic levelled the score in the 67th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, catching Milan's goalkeeper Mike Maignan off guard.
The equaliser was just what the game needed as it put pressure on the home side Milan as they sought to regain their advantage.
In the dying moments of the match, Abraham emerged as the hero for Milan. He capitalised on a rebound following a header that hit the crossbar, scoring from close range in the 87th minute to secure all three points for his team.
With this win, AC Milan continue to build momentum in their Champions League campaign as they remain firmly in contention for a place in the elusive knockout stages.
