Wanyama returned to the bench for the Red Bulls match and was relegated to an observatory role throughout the clash.

In a tightly contested MLS match on Wednesday morning, former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama returned to the bench for Montreal Impact's clash against the New York Red Bulls, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Wanyama, who captained Montreal in their previous game against Atlanta United, was replaced by Samuel Piette and watched from the sidelines as his team fought for a point.

The match, held at the Red Bull Arena, saw Josef Martínez emerge as the hero for Montreal, scoring both second-half goals to help his team salvage a draw.

The Red Bulls took an early lead in the 18th minute when Wiki Carmona sent a low, rolling shot from 25 yards out that slipped inside the post. This marked Carmona's third goal of the season, surpassing his career total of two goals.

Montreal responded in the 67th minute when Matías Cóccaro, from a free kick just outside the area, tapped the ball to Martínez. His one-touch shot deflected off Montreal’s Nathan Saliba and into the net, making it 1-1.

The Red Bulls regained the lead in the 75th minute due to an unfortunate own goal by Montreal’s Mathieu Choinière, who redirected a corner kick into his own net, putting New York ahead 2-1.

The turning point came in the 80th minute when Jules-Anthony Vilsaint drew a foul in the area, leading to a red card for Sean Nealis after a video review confirmed a denial of a scoring opportunity. Martínez calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 81st minute to level the score at 2-2.

The match was notably delayed for nearly two hours at halftime due to inclement weather, adding an unusual twist to an already dramatic game.

Montreal  continued their recent run of form with three wins and just one loss in their last five games. Meanwhile, the Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games, although they have secured only one win during this period since their 1-0 loss to the New England Revolution on June 8. The teams had previously played to a 2-2 draw on June 19.

Wanyama, a key figure for Montreal, will be looking to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup as the team aims to climb up the standings.
