Ademola Lookman spoke Yoruba during his CAF Awards speech.

An elated Ademola Lookman clad in Yoruba regalia (Agbada) delivered an opening statement in his mother's tongue after receiving the CAF's Men's Footballer of the Year Award.

The 27-year-old has been on a meteoric rise since last season, and it has culminated in being crowned the best player in the continent. Despite being raised overseas, Lookman showed that he is a true son of the soil as he embraced his Yoruba heritage during the award ceremony.

The Atalanta and Super Eagles forward wore an agbada in Nigeria's national colours, green, displaying his sense of national and cultural pride, and his first words as African Footballer of the Year were "E Kale (Good evening), Ese, Modupe (Thank You).

Lookman's Award speech

As Pulse Sports reported, Lookman was named the CAF Men's Player of the Year after an incredible catchment period, in which he led the Super Eagles to silver at the AFCON and Atalanta to their first-ever European trophy

Lookman was filled with joy as CAF acknowledged his growth and success with the award, and he sent a powerful message to all watching.

After his Yoruba opening, Lookman proceeded with the rest of his speech in English. “I want to thank everyone for the support and love they gave me,” he said. “This award today is a blessing to me, to my family, to my nation.”

“To be recognised as the best player in Africa is something incredible that I am extremely proud of. Just over four years ago, I felt the weight of the world. Fast forward four years, I'm the best player in Africa.

“I want to say to all the young children, people watching this, don't let your failures weigh you down; they break your wings. Turn your pain into your power, and continue to fly. God bless.
