According to reports, Boehly's time as co-controlling owner and chairman of Chelsea may be coming to an end.

Chelsea’s main shareholders, Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, are considering their future ownership of the Premier League club, according to Bloomberg

The Clearlake, Boehly-led consortium acquired the West London club from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in a £4.25 billion ($5.6 billion) deal in 2022, but have struggled to replicate prior success on the pitch despite spending more than £1 billion on acquiring players since the takeover.

Why Boehly seemingly wants out of Chelsea

According to the report, the relationship between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly has deteriorated in recent months, fuelled by differing opinions on the club's recruitment policy, underperformance, and the stalled stadium development.

Clearlake, which holds a majority 60% stake in Chelsea, with Boehly holding the rest alongside US businessman Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, have explored the possibility of buying each other out.

As per the report, both parties remain committed to the club in the short term but face challenges in achieving their goals, despite a keenness to handle the situation professionally.

The current ownership group have attracted significant attention due to their substantial spending in the transfer market since 2022.

They have invested over £1 billion since taking over from Abramovich, including breaking the British transfer record twice to sign Enzo Fernandez in January 2023 and Moises Caicedo in the summer of 2023

Despite this significant investment, their trophy cabinet remains empty, with a defeat in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool being their closest attempt at silverware.

In the Premier League, the Blues have finished 12th in the 2022-23 season and sixth in the previous 23-24 campaign.

Clearlake and Boehly have struggled to find a stable manager, having parted ways with Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino in the past two years.

They appointed Enzo Maresca in June 2024, hoping the Italian would lead the team to their first trophy since winning the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.
