Transfer News: Barcelona ahead of EPL rivals, PSG in race for EURO 2024 sensation
The race to sign one of EURO 2024's best players will not be straightforward as Europe's top clubs prepare to do battle.
They are currently in negotiations with the player's agent over his wages and are waiting for him to agree on personal terms to trigger his release clause.
Williams’ release clause was marked at €58 million, a fee Barcelona are happy to pay, as well as Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain; however, that figure is set to change.
Williams' release clause change
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the stated release clause on the Spanish winger's contract is set to increase.
Per the report, the release clause is subject to the Consumer Price Index. CPI is used to measure inflation, and certain release clauses are indexed to inflation, meaning a rise in inflation will see the fee in the clause increase.
Williams's contract with Athletic Club is seemingly of this nature, as MD projected his release clause to climb up to €62 million. However, despite their financial situation, Barcelona are not expected to struggle with this increase, as they are insistent on landing their man.
