With Manchester United officially parting ways with Erik ten Hag, the spotlight turns to assessing the legacy he leaves behind.

Ten Hag, who was appointed in April 2022, led United to two domestic trophies — the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024 before leaving the job, but will never be forgotten for his impressive win percentage.

Despite his recent struggles, including a poor start to the current season, Ten Hag’s tenure has ended with him joining José Mourinho as one of United’s most successful managers since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford brought a win rate of 54.6%, placing him second only to Mourinho among United managers in the post-Ferguson era.

However, while his win record was commendable, Ten Hag also struggled to maintain consistent success, enduring a loss rate of 31.8% — one of the highest among recent Red Devils managers.

His sacking comes with United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, with only three wins from their opening nine matches, a rough start that ultimately ended his time in Manchester.

Mourinho and Ten Hag Set the Standard for Success

Ten Hag’s departure also shines a light on Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford, which was also marked by trophies and a high win percentage.

During his tenure, Mourinho led United to a Europa League title, making him the only post-Ferguson manager to achieve European success.

For Ten Hag, his achievements — despite the challenges — position him alongside Mourinho as one of the club’s most successful managers since Ferguson, a reminder of the high expectations at Manchester United and the pressure for managers to deliver year after year.
