Mourinho's Fenerbahce crash out of Champions League

Fenerbahce will not compete in next season's Champions League after losing to Lille in the play-offs.

Jose Mourinho’s Champions League dreams with Fenerbahce have been derailed after they were knocked out of the qualifiers by Ligue 1 side Lille.

Fenerbahce suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg against Lille in France and needed to win the second leg in Turkey to qualify for the Champions League’s group stage.

They managed to get a 1-0 win in regular time, but it was only enough to force extra time, which they conceded, sealing their exit.

Key match details

Mourinho’s side started brilliantly but could not capitalise on their early dominance before Lille found their footing. The game ebbed and flowed, with both teams enjoying periods of dominance.

The games remained scoreless until past the 90th-minute mark. With the final whistle approaching, which would effectively seal Fenerbahce’s fate, Bafode Diakite scored an own goal, which helped the hosts win 1-0 and restore parity to the aggregate scoreline.

The game entered extra time, and while Mourinho's side pressed for the winning goal and even got a numerical advantage, after Lille’s Aissa Mandi saw red in the 109th minute, it was Les Douges who had the last laugh.

Bruno Genesio’s side scored late into the second half of extra-time thanks to a Jonathan David equaliser to draw 1-1 on the night and win 3-2 on aggregate. Fenerbahce have now crashed out of the Champions League and will now compete in Europe's second-tier competition, the Europa League.
