It was mixed fortunes for the Kenyans as Onyango played all 90 minutes but lost while Muguna was on the bench for the winning side

Kenneth Muguna’s Azam FC got the better of Joash Onyango’s Simba SC to make it to the final of the Azam Sports Federation Cup at the Nangwanda Sijaona grounds in Mtwara on Sunday.

Muguna started from the bench with Onyango on from the off, slotting in at centre-back alongside Henock Inonga Baka, but Simba were carved open after 22 minutes when Lusajo Mwaikenda slotted home.

However, Azam’s lead last just six minutes when Malian midfielder Sadio Kanoute equalised to set up a tight end to the first half.

Both teams employed a cautious approach in the second half with chances few and far between although Simba threatened through star forward Kibu Dennis only for poor finishing let the Tanzanian forward down.

It was not until the 75th minute that Azam found what turned out to be the winner after substitute Prince Dube scored the second goal and they held on for the win to claim a place in the final.

It was a disappointing outing for Simba who have now been knocked out of two competitions in just over one week, having been eliminated from the CAF Champions League at the quarter-final stage by defending champions Wydad Casablanca.

Wekundu wa Msimbazi are now left with the league title to contest but they find themselves seven points behind bitter rivals and defending champions Yanga, with three games to go, meaning Mwananchi need just one more win to make it three straight crowns.

Victory for Azam, meanwhile, presents them with a chance to claim some piece of silverware this campaign after falling off in the league despite the club’s huge outlay on top talent.

Yanga and Singida United will contest the other semi-final which will determine who faces Azam in the final.
