Mukwala's culinary concerns come as a surprise given his outstanding debut season with the Kumasi-based giants.
As Asante Kotoko SC's Ugandan striker, Steven Mukwala, gears up for the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season, he's opened up about the unique challenges he faces in the West African country—most notably, his struggles with the local cuisine.
Mukwala's culinary concerns come as a surprise given his outstanding debut season with the Kumasi-based giants.
After joining the team in 2022 from Uganda Premier League side URA FC, Mukwala netted an impressive 13 goals in 35 matches, 11 of which came in the GPL alone.
His prowess wasn’t limited to local competition; the 24-year-old striker tallied two goals in the CAF Confederation Cup and provided five assists throughout the 2022/23 season.
“The only challenge I face in Ghana is basically from the food point – the ‘pepper’ because I don’t take pepper so that is really a challenge,” he told the club’s media.
“On climate, the sun is too scorchy in Ghana but this season, I am ready for everything and ready for the challenge.”
This adaptable mindset might be particularly useful as the team seeks to reclaim its top position.
Mukwala's individual brilliance was a silver lining, Kotoko, as a unit, had a challenging season, finishing fourth in the league, eight points behind champions Medeama.
Even with the food struggles and Asante Kotoko’s mixed season, Mukwala is optimistic about the club's prospects, especially under returning coach Prosper Ogum.
"I am super excited to join my colleagues...we are motivated and with the new coach we shall be hitting the best," the 24-year-old stated.
To strengthen the squad, Asante Kotoko has brought in fresh talents like Andrews Ntim, Nanabayin Amoah, and Yahaya Dawuni.
Mukwala is stepping into the final year of his contract, but given his outstanding performance and the team's revamped energy, an extension seems likely.
Asante Kotoko will open their GPL campaign against Heart of Lions on September 16, 2023, at the Baba Yara Stadium,
