Baller of the Week: Osimhen beats Super Eagles teammate who dethroned him
Nigeria Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen returns as the Naija Stars Abroad's Baller of the Week after an impressive performance at the weekend.
While he didn’t add to his 10 goals this season, the 26-year-old delivered with his playmaking as he grabbed his fourth assist of the campaign to inspire Galatasaray to a 2-1 win.
Osimhen has now scored or assisted 14 goals this season in just 13 matches for Galatasaray since his shock switch from Serie A last summer.
Nevertheless, he was outshone by forgotten Nigerian striker David Okereke, who was the hero for his modest club Gaziantep FK.
Gaziantep extended their unbeaten streak to five matches across competitions after a narrow 1-0 win at home against Demirspor, with Okereke scoring the decisive winner.
In a complete performance that saw him create two chances, make two key passes, and complete two dribbles, Okereke, 27, netted for the second successive game to take his tally to five goals and two assists in 13 matches in the Super Lig.
In the Bundesliga, Nathan Tella turned up for champions Bayer Leverkusen as they defeated Borussia Dortmund to temporarily go just a point behind leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Tella fired Leverkusen in front after just 25 seconds for his first of the season in the Bundesliga for Xabi Alonso’s men.
Mr. reliable Moses Simon impressed on Friday but it was not enough to earn Nantes all three points against Monaco in the Ligue 1.
Simon played from start to finish, created two chances, two key passes and completed two dribbles but Nantes were held to a 2-2 draw at home.
Elsewhere, it was a quiet weekend for Africa’s Finest Ademola Lookman in Italy after he was rendered ineffective in Atalanta’s goalless affair at Udinese. It was a rare day off for the reliable star.
Meanwhile, it was a Super Falcons show in the Spanish Liga F as Rinsola Babajide and Monday Gift inspired their club UDCA Tenerife.
Both Super Falcons stars join as the contenders for Naija Stars Abroad’s Baller of the Week after leading Tenerife to a 5-1 victory.
The duo were involved in four of the five goals, Gift helped herself to a brace while Risola scored one and assisted another for the club.
Moving away from Europe, Odion Ighalo, Saviour Godwin and William Troost-Ekong were on fire in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League.
Ighalo netted for Al-Wehda to fire them to a first win of the year alongside Troost-Ekong, who picked up an assist for his team’s thrilling win. But it was different for Godwin, who scored against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr but it was not enough to give them a point against the Sadio Mane-inspired side.
