It was a weekend for Super Eagles defenders with Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi all caged.

The weekend was a rather quiet one for Naija Stars Abroad but a good one for Super Eagles defenders who stole the show from their national teammates Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze

With the 2024 CAF Awards on the horizon, Lookman could be forgiven for his quiet outing for Atalanta against Cagliari on Saturday.

The 27-year-old lasted just 45 minutes in their 1-0 defeat away from home with the Eagles star subbed off early on to plan his trip to Morocco for the Player of the Year award ceremony.

In Milan, his compatriot Chukwueze delivered a lively performance on the occasion of AC’s 125th anniversary. Handed a rare start, Samu put on a creative masterclass which turned out not to be enough as Genoa held on for a share of the spoils after a goalless affair.

For the Premier League contingent, Iwobi led the way with a credible display in Fulham’s 2-2 draw at Anfield against Liverpool.

The playmaker featured from start to finish for the Cottagers who came close to ending Liverpool’s 18-game unbeaten run but for Diogo Jota’s late heroics.

Nottingham Forest continue to impress after coming from behind to beat Aston Villa at the City Ground with Ola Aina reinforcing his position as one of the best fullbacks in the PL with another strong outing.

In what was the Super Eagles derby in Germany, Nathan Tella had the last laugh as Bayer Leverkusen sealed a 2-0 win against Frank Onyeka’s Augsburg.

Tella continued his role as a centre forward and picked up an assist for the winner scored by whizkid Florian Wirtz.

Another Nigerian derby pitted Raphael Onyedika against giant Toluwase Arokodare in the Belgian Jupiler. The game ended 2-0 in favour of Onyedika’s Club Brugge, with former Baller of the Week, Arokodare, missing a penalty.

Arokodare missed from 12 yards.

Super Eagles defender shines

In a weekend that saw their attacking teammates fire blank bar Moses Simon who joined Tella to pick up an assist at Nantes, it was the weekend for the defenders.

The New Super Eagles star Gabriel Osho opened his account for Auxerre as they shared the spoils with Lens, who had Hamzat Ojediran as a second half substitute, in the thrilling 2-2 draw in the French top flight.

Another defender who found the net was Augustine Eguavoen’s trusted left-back, Bruno Onyemaechi, the Portugal-based star.

Onyemaechi scored his second of the season but it was not enough to stop Sporting Lisbon who ran away 3-2 winners.
