Nairobi County League side Kasarani FC have been thrown into mourning following the demise of their player who collapsed on the pitch and died shortly after while being rushed to hospital.

Nairobi County League side Kasarani FC have been left devastated following the untimely death of their full-back Abraham Fagbemi who collapsed on the pitch before being pronounced dead a short while later.

The Nigerian full-back was in action for his side during their friendly match with Levintis United at Njiru grounds in Nairobi over the weekend when he met his death in bizarre circumstances.

“We were playing a friendly match against Levintis United at Njiru grounds and 15 minutes into the game, he signaled to us that he wanted water,” said Kasarani FC team manager Kennedy Chege.

“I sent someone at the touchline to get him water and then I saw him touch his chest as if something was wrong with his heart and he then knelt down.

“By the time we were getting him water, he said he did not want it again while breathing heavily this time. We tried a CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] test but his heartbeat was weak.

“This is when we got him into the car and rushed him to the hospital. On our way, we noticed his pulse was weak and assumed he was just unconscious.

“When we arrived at Mama Lucy Hospital, we took him into the emergency and the doctors conducted some tests and told us that unfortunately, he had passed away.

“This is hard for us to take because he never exhibited any signs of discomfort previously. He played well and even in the warmup before this game he was fine.”

The former Kibra United player has been in Kenya for nearly three years after coming to the country for football trials and study.

Abraham met his death at a time when his career was just taking off both on and off the pitch as he had completed college studies just last week.

“It is difficult to see a young man’s life cut short. He had just completed college last week and he was set for a job interview at an embassy today [Tuesday],” added Chege.
