New Champions League format forces teams to win: Two-time finalist

A manager of one of the competing teams has disclosed that draws are no longer acceptable in the new format.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has emphasised the importance of winning in the new Champions League format, stating that draws are no longer acceptable.

What is the new Champions League format?

The recent introduction of a 36-team league phase in Europe's elite club competition has significantly altered the tournament’s dynamics.

All teams will now play eight different opponents, two more from six previously, with the top eight sides advancing to the last 16.

The clubs ranked ninth to 24th are paired in two-legged ties to determine the other eight clubs to advance to the round of 16.

Clubs ending below 24th in the group phase exit continental football until the next season, a significant change from previous years when they potentially dropped into the Europa League.

What Simone said

Speaking after a stoppage-time winner from Jose Gimenez settled a close match with RB Leipzig in Madrid, the two-time runner-up in 2014 and 2016 explained the importance of victories over stalemates.

“This format forces us to win, in this match a draw would be of little use,” said the Atletico boss.

“The format requires us to try to win, then, if we can’t, we will have to get something out of it. Those who win the most will be in the group of eight to qualify and who will not have to play two more games.”

What comes next?
