The former Chelsea and Inter manager is not having a smooth start to life as Napoli boss
Antonio Conte’s tenure as Napoli's head coach has barely begun, but the Italian gaffer is already expressing dissatisfaction with two of his key players: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
Napoli hire Conte to stop downward spiral
The Partenopei have been in disarray since their triumphant Scudetto victory in the 2022/23 season, a success followed by a disastrous title defence that saw the team go through three head coaches in one season.
This instability prompted club president Aurelio De Laurentiis to bring in Conte, but the former Chelsea and Juventus manager’s early tenure at Napoli has been anything but smooth.
The initial optimism that greeted his appointment is being overshadowed by internal discord involving two of the team’s most important players, despite Conte initially making it clear that he envisioned both Kvaratskhelia and Di Lorenzo as central to his new project.
Conte’s key men headed for Napoli exit
Kvaratskhelia, who is with the Georgian national team at the Euros, has been a focal point of Conte’s frustration as his future at the club remains uncertain. His agent, Mamuka Jugeli, has recently been vocal about his client’s ambitions, which have attracted significant interest from PSG.
PSG has reportedly prepared a lucrative contract offer for Kvaratskhelia, worth around €11 million net per season for four to five years, but Napoli has firmly refused to entertain any offers for him this summer. Conte is displeased with Kvaratskhelia's evasive stance regarding his future, fearing it could disrupt the team’s dynamics.
Di Lorenzo, Napoli’s captain, is another source of tension for Conte as his agent, Mario Giuffredi, has publicly stated his client’s desire to leave the club as well. Conte had hoped to build his new project around Di Lorenzo’s leadership, but the captain’s discontent threatens this vision and talks are expected to be held with the Italian full-back in the coming days to address his frustrations, although a departure remains a possibility.
