The 34-year-old spent three weeks in hospital after undergoing surgery for a broken leg sustained in the incident in Epping, Essex.

The Accident and Recovery

Antonio was trapped in his Ferrari after the accident and required extrication before being transported to a London hospital.

He is expected to be sidelined for at least a year due to the injury, with his contract expiring at the end of the current season.

However, reports suggest West Ham is still considering extending his contract based on his recovery progress.

Antonio's Emotional Message

In an emotional Instagram post, Antonio expressed his gratitude for being alive and reflected on the fragility of life.

He thanked the emergency services, the NHS, air ambulance personnel, the Royal London and Cromwell hospitals, and everyone at West Ham United, including the medical team, board, staff, teammates, and fans.

He also expressed his appreciation for his loved ones and the wider football community for their support.

“Every year around this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: being alive,” Antonio wrote on Instagram.

He continued, “I’ve spent so many years taking life for granted... What I’ve been through recently has opened my eyes. Life is fragile, and every single moment matters. I’m so grateful to God for giving me the strength to keep going and for allowing me to still be here.”

“Happy new year- and I’ll be back on that pitch soon," he concluded his message with a promise.

Despite the accident, Antonio remains a key part of the West Ham squad, having started 11 of his 15 appearances across all competitions this season.
