According to circulating reports, Super Eagles legend Christian Chukwu was owed a huge sum of money by the Nigerian Football Federation until his death.

The former Nigeria national team captain and coach surrendered to the cold hands of death on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74.

For many years, he spoke about the poor treatment of Indigenous coaches by the country’s football federation, noting that most of them were being owed for the jobs they did with the national team.

In an interview with Oluwashina Okeleji of BBC Sports in 2008, he claimed he was owed over  $128,000 USD for his role with the Super Eagles between 2002 and 2005.

These monies were from the backlog of salaries in that period, and he revealed that there were no responses regardless of his efforts.

"It is annoying that I toiled so much and these people at the NFA cannot figure out ways of sorting out the money they owe me," Chukwu said in the interview.

"I have made several efforts through writing, telephone calls and visits to the NFA office but there is still no word.

"The last time they assured me that they would get to the bottom of the matter.

"It's very frustrating and annoying to be treated this way. I am very sure a foreign coach will not be treated this way."

News broke that Chukwu was seriously ill in 2019 and needed urgent medical treatment, leaving many Nigerians worried.

At this time he was still being owed by the NFF, but it was Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola who donated ₦36.6 million (about $100,000) to support Chukwu’s treatment. With that help, he was flown to the UK for medical care.

The NFF requested that Chukwu provide evidence that he was being owed, but the issue was not sorted until his death.
