Nwankwo Kanu's Enyimba kicked off their CAFCC group stage with a crushing opening loss.

Nwankwo Kanu's hopes of guiding Enyimba to success in the CAF Confederation Cup have taken a significant blow following a painful opening match defeat.

The legendary Super Eagles striker, now serving as Enyimba's ambitious chairman, witnessed his team suffer a crushing 2-0 loss to Egyptian side Al Masry at the Suez Canal Stadium on Wednesday night.

The match marked the beginning of the group stage for the CAF Confederation Cup, CAFCC, with Enyimba representing as the sole team from Nigeria remaining in continental competition.

Unfortunately for Kanu and the People’s Elephant, Al Masry delivered a dominant performance, showcasing their strength early on in front of their fans.

Mahmoud Hamada emerged as the standout player, scoring both goals for the Egyptian side, including a composed finish just five minutes into the match.

Enyimba's attack, spearheaded by Ismael Saraki and promising youngster Jephta Clinton, struggled to penetrate Al Masry's well-organised defence throughout the game.

Enyimba struggled against their hosts in the CAFCC opener.

Despite their efforts, the Nigerian side, who had goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena to thank for the low scoreline, was unable to find the back of the net, leaving Kanu and his teammates to reflect on what could have been.

This defeat is particularly disheartening for Enyimba and their young manager Yemi Olanrewaju, who have high hopes of making a deep run in this year's competition.

Nigerian giants Enyimba are Nigeria's only team left in any CAF competition.

Kanu's experience and leadership were expected to inspire a strong showing from the team, but they will need to regroup quickly as they look ahead to the next fixtures in the CAFCC.

Enyimba must find a way to bounce back from this setback if they are to keep their dreams of continental glory alive. The road ahead will be challenging, but with Kanu's guidance and support, there remains hope for improvement in future matches.
