The breakthrough finally arrived through a brilliant header from Osimhen with just over 15 minutes left in the match. But just when it seemed like Chelle’s men would secure a much-needed win, disaster struck.

Chelle sparks controversy with post-match handshake snub
This reality could have been weighing on Eric Chelle’s mind at the full-time whistle as the Nigerian head coach completely ignored the ritual of a post-match handshake with the opposing coach.
Despite the best attempts of Zimbabwe’s head coach, Michael Nees, to get the attention of Chelle for a customary handshake, the Super Eagles boss appeared completely disinterested, blanking the German tactician, which led to the Warriors’ boss becoming increasingly agitated.
Michael Nees, who had been full of praise for the hospitality he and his team had received from Nigerians while in the country for the crucial World Cup qualifier will now be leaving the country with a not-so-pleasant memory as well.
Nees and his Warriors will also be leaving Nigeria with a point, a feat most people thought was beyond them and the Zimbabweans will also take great pride in denting the Super Eagles’ chances of being at the 2026 World Cup.
