Nigerian footballer Bala slumps, dies in Spain

The defender had played in the NPFL with Jigawa Golden Stars in the 2021 season.

Former Jigawa United defender Hadi Ado Bala has reportedly collapsed and died while playing for his club CD Madridejos, against SP Cabanillas in a Spain division game.

In a statement, the Castilla-La Mancha Football Federation revealed that the incident which had happened on Sunday, saw the Nigerian youngster slump in the 39th minute of the game, for no apparent reason.

According to reports, medical staff at the Municipal Toledo Stadium rushed to his aid right away, but their attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Thereafter, he was declared dead.

Reactions to the tragedy

Prior to Sunday's unfortunate incident, Hadi had appeared to be in good health and had no known illnesses before the game.

The eldest brother of the deceased, Misbau Ado Bala, who spoke to Daily Trust on behalf of the family, termed the tragedy as a loss to not only the family but also to Nigerians and the footballing community.

“The Castilla-La Mancha Football Federation and Castilian-La Mancha football, with its President Pablo Burillo at the helm, are totally dismayed at such an event,” the statement by Castilla-La Mancha Football Federation said following the incident.

“For this reason, the federative body remains at the disposal of CD Madridejos for everything it needs in these difficult times.”

Hadi is also understood to have at some point in his playing career, tried out at Nigerian giants Kano Pillars.

Reacting to the incident in a conversation with Sports Brief, Idris Malikawa, the media officer of the four-time Nigerian champions said: ''It is unfortunate that we have lost him and I pray that Allah should forgive him and grant him eternal rest. Before he left Nigeria, he came to Pillars from Jigawa and we even wanted to sign him before the Spain deal came for him."

21-year-old Hadi who was born in Kafanchan, Kaduna State began his football career with Arewa United FC before moving to Jigawa and Plateau States.

Other clubs he played for in Kafanchan include Shareef Academy, Golden Balley, Zaria Bees, and Salama FC.
