Nigerian and Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu will play in the Championship next season after Southampton confirmed their relegation against Tottenham.

Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Sunday after a disappointing defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, consigning Nigerian and Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu to Championship football next season.

Aribo started the match, while Onuachu came off the bench, but their efforts couldn’t prevent the Saints from slipping out of the top flight with seven matches still to play, marking the fastest relegation in the competition’s history.

The encounter at Tottenham was a tale of two halves. Spurs dominated the opening 45 minutes, with Brennan Johnson proving the difference-maker.

The home side took the lead when Djed Spence’s overlapping run resulted in a precise cut-back, allowing Johnson to lash the ball past Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The advantage doubled soon after, as Pedro Porro’s whipped cross was headed across the six-yard box, with Lucas Bergvall on hand to tap in. Johnson nearly made it three before the break, but his clever first-time finish from James Maddison’s flicked header slipped just wide.

Southampton emerged revitalised after halftime, showing some delightful football. Their persistence paid off when Mateus Fernandes crashed home a close-range effort following a pinpoint cross from the left, giving the visitors a lifeline.

Onuachu couldn't save the Saints.

Tottenham had their moments too, with Spence nearly adding a third in the first half after bullying his way into the penalty area and forcing Ramsdale into a diving save.

The home side also saw a goal disallowed, but Johnson’s second of the match, a slick finish from Maddison’s clever assist, ensured Spurs’ dominance held firm.

Despite the spirited comeback, their fate was sealed late on when Mathys Tel scored his first Premier League goal from a penalty. Ramsdale got a hand to the shot, but the young French forward’s effort had enough power to find the net.

For Southampton, the defeat marks the end of their Premier League journey this season. Aribo, a regular presence in midfield, and Onuachu, who made a substitute appearance, will now prepare for life in the Championship alongside their teammates.

The Super Eagles duo’s performances couldn’t turn the tide, but Southampton’s second-half display offered a glimpse of the fight they’ll bring to the second tier as they aim for a swift return to the top flight.
