Segun Odegbami, a legendary Nigerian forward, described William Troost-Ekong's costly error as a moment that will "haunt him for the rest of his life."
The Super Eagles suffered a hit to their 2026 World Cup hopes following a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
Nigeria could have moved into second place in Group C, narrowing the gap on South Africa, with a victory after Victor Osimhen's second-half goal had put the Super Eagles ahead.
However, the experienced centre-back made an error that led to Zimbabwe's late equaliser, allowing Tawanda Chirewa to skip past him.

Super Eagles captain William Troost Ekong has taken to social media following Nigeria’s draw against Zimbabwe.
Odegbami speaks on Ekong’s error
Odegbami, in his Vanguard column, strongly criticised Troost-Ekong, suggesting that his mistake could have long-lasting repercussions for both the player and Nigerian football.
He said, “Unfortunately, what Ekong did may haunt him for the rest of his life. It could be the moment Nigeria lost the opportunity to go to the 2026 World Cup.
)
”It could turn out to be his last chance to attend a World Cup. It was a moment Nigerians, all 250 million of them, will remember forever.
“Ekong took his leg off the pedal, probably thinking he might trip the attacker and give away a penalty kick (We will never know now).
)
“He let the ball and the opposing attacker go through, a gift to the player who slid the ball under a helplessly sprawling Nwabali for an equalising goal that pierced the hearts of 250 million Nigerians like a knife.”
