Lookman was the overwhelming favourite heading into the awards and was duly crowned the winner of this year’s award to make it two Nigerian victors in a row.
Lookman sees off tough competition to be named African best
The Super Eagles forward beat off competition from Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Sehrou Guirassy, Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams to win the coveted award.
Lookman’s exceptional performances this year, where he starred at both the club and international level helped him surpass some of the continent’s biggest names to secure the CAF African Footballer of the Year award.
Lookman was the driving force behind Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and also made history with a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final to give Atalanta their maiden European trophy.
His exploits earned him a place in the 2024 Ballon d’Or top 20 as well as a nomination for FIFA The Best’s Forward of the Year award, making his victory in the CAF African Footballer of the Year an easy decision.
Lookman joins illustrious list of Nigerian winners
The Atalanta forward became the sixth Nigerian player to scoop the CAF African Men’s Footballer of the Year award following in the immediate footsteps of Super Eagles teammate Victor Osimhen, who was crowned winner in 2023.
Before Osimhen’s triumph last year, Nigeria had to wait 24 years for an African Men’s Footballer of the Year winner following Nwankwo Kanu’s 1999 victory.
Kanu’s 1999 and 1996 wins make him the Nigerian player with the most CAF African Footballer of the Year awards, with Victor Ikpeba, Emmanuel Amueke, Rashidi Yekini, Osimhen, and now Lookman all tied on one apiece.
