The Super Eagles star has led Galatasaray’s title charge since joining on loan from Napoli this summer, and losing him at the midway point of the season could be disastrous for the Turkish giants.
Osimhen leading Galatasaray charge
Galatasaray are galloping towards a 25th Super Lig title as they top the Turkish league table after 16 game weeks, with 44 points, eight more than second-placed Fenerbahce, who are struggling to keep pace.
The reigning champions’ title challenge has been majorly backed by Osimhen’s form in the Super Lig, with the Nigerian already registering nine goals and three assists in 11 league games this season.
The Super Eagles striker’s form since joining on loan from Napoli in September has been instrumental to Galatasaray’s ambition but has also attracted attention to the 25-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.
Galatasaray urged not to lose Osimhen
Despite interest from clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, Galatasaray have been urged to do all they can to keep hold of Osimhen by former Super Lig champion Sanin Engin.
Engin, who won the 1985/86 Super Lig title with Besiktas, was adamant that Osimhen’s January exit could spell the end of Galatasaray’s title challenge, and was quoted by Galatasaray Gazetesi as saying, “If Osimhen leaves Galatasaray in January, the balance in the Championship race may be disrupted.”
Given Osimhen’s form and the season-ending injury to Mauro Icardi, Engin’s words of warning could ring true for Galatasaray, who would lack sufficient firepower to sustain their title charge if they lose the Super Eagles star in the January transfer window.
Galatasaray fans can rest assured knowing that manager Orkan Buruk remains positive that Osimhen is committed to the Lions' cause and will honour his loan move until the end of the season.
