The Kariakoo derby pitting Simba SC against Yanga is in doubt. Here is why the match might not happen.

The second leg of the 2024-25 Kariakoo Derby that was to involve Yanga against bitter rivals Simba at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday from 7:15pm might not be played.

This is after Simba vowed to boycott the highly anticipated clash after citing ‘uncivilised actions’ against their team ahead of the game. According to the communique seen by Puls Sports Kenya, Simba raised concerns saying: "Simba Sports Club is disappointed by the uncivilized actions against our team in the lead-up to the NBC Premier League match against Yanga, Simba being the away team."

"In accordance with Rule 17(45) of the Mainland Premier League Rules, the Away Team has the right to practice at the match venue at least once before the match day during the expected time of the relevant match. Simba has been deliberately denied that right despite arriving at the stadium at the relevant time.

"Simba was informed by the Stadium Manager that he had no instructions to allow training to take place without the instructions of the Game Commissioner. Despite the arrival of the relevant Game Commissioner, Yanga Club's bouncers invaded the Simba Motorcade while continuing to cause violence and preventing the Simba Motorcade from entering the stadium to practice.

Simba's efforts to find a solution to the challenge were fruitless for more than two hours before Simba left the area outside the stadium for security reasons which have been recorded in evidence. Following this wicked act, Simba categorically stated: "Following this breach of the Game Regulations, Simba will not participate in the relevant Game and all rights are reserved. Simba urges that appropriate action be taken against all parties involved in this saga."

Despite Simba saying they won't play, Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) acknowledged to have received the complaint and promised to investigate the matter. TFF maintained that the derby match will be played as planned.

"The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has received a letter of complaint from Simba Sports Club regarding the challenges that arose before the NBC Premier League match against Yanga.

We have taken immediate steps to investigate the incident. Therefore, in accordance with the Federation's regulations, we instruct them to continue with the game as planned in order to respect the NBC Premier League schedule and consider the interests of fans, sponsors, and the league in general. Complaints about the challenges that have arisen will be addressed in a timely manner."

Heading into the game, Yanga occupied top spot on 58 points after 22 matches while Simba sat in second place on 54 points having played a game less.
