The Real Madrid star has been cleared by prosecutors following an enquiry into allegations of rape.
Swedish prosecutors have officially dismissed the rape investigation surrounding French football superstar Kylian Mbappé.
The case, which drew global media attention, stemmed from an alleged incident in Stockholm last October, as first reported by Swedish news outlet Expressen.
However, after weeks of thorough investigation, authorities concluded that there was insufficient evidence to proceed, bringing an end to the speculation and uncertainty that shadowed the 25-year-old Real Madrid forward.
Mbappe's lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, confirmed to Reuters that the Swedish investigation of the Les Blues skipper has ended.
Marina Chirakova, the lead investigator on the case, confirmed on Thursday that while initial suspicions had been raised involving allegations of rape and two instances of sexual assault, the legal standards required to advance the matter had not been met.
“During our investigation, there was a person suspected on reasonable grounds of rape and two counts of sexual assault, but my conclusion is that the evidence is insufficient to advance, leading to the closure of the case,” Chirakova stated.
She added that no formal charges had ever been presented to the individual concerned.
Stockholm Rape case: Mbappé denies all Allegations
The case, which reportedly focused on an incident at a Stockholm hotel, generated a media frenzy when Swedish outlets began linking Mbappé’s name to the investigation.
However, the France international and his legal team swiftly dismissed the claims as baseless.
Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, Mbappé’s attorney, categorically denied the accusations, labelling the rumours “irresponsible” and “unfounded.”
Speaking in a recent interview on Clique TV, Mbappé expressed his bewilderment over the allegations, reiterating that he had never been approached by Swedish authorities.
“Such situations arise in life unexpectedly; they are unforeseeable,” he remarked.
“It’s baffling. I never saw myself involved in any way.”
The Los Blancos star had been in Sweden for rehabilitation from a thigh injury during the October international break, opting to focus on recovery rather than join the French squad for their Nations League fixtures.
Shortly after his visit, news of the investigation surfaced, fuelling widespread speculation about the suspect’s identity.
While Swedish prosecutors initially confirmed that an investigation was underway, they refused to provide details about the individuals involved, leaving the public to speculate further.
The legal case also sparked outrage among Mbappé’s supporters, with many expressing concern over the potential reputational damage to his career.
However, the dismissal offers relief to Mbappé, whose camp has maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal.
