‘Nothing less than a win'—Eguavoen reveals what he expects from his team

Austin Eguavoen, the Super Eagles' interim manager, has stated that Nigeria will aim for a win in their game against Benin Republic.

The Nigerian Football Federation chose Eguavoen to head the men's football team on an interim basis when Bruno Labbadia's appointment went awry.

This meant that Eguavoen would be guiding the Super Eagles for the third time as Nigeria looks to qualify for the next AFCON tournament.

Eguavoen will coach the team against Benin Republic, with both sides meeting in June in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash, in which Gernot Rohr’s side clinched a 2-1 victory.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria's 2025 AFCON match with the Benin Republic, the head coach insisted that the Super Eagles would aim for a win.

Eguavoen said in his pre-match conference, “It’s a new journey, we all know. Preparations towards the Nations Cup, the first game, and nothing short of winning.

“Expectations are high, we’re in good spirits, we’re at home, we respect people, and we expect nothing less than three points, nothing less than a win.”

Eguavoen is expecting the Super Eagles team to aim for a win against Benin and Rwanda in their AFCON qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen, who had flown to Turkey to finish his delayed move to Galatasaray, was able to participate in the last training session.
