Obasanjo served as Nigeria's head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as president from 1999 to 2007.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has come out as the top player in a novelty game between the alumni football team of the Baptist Boys’ High School (BBHS), Abeokuta, and the teachers of the school.
The game, which took place at the school's football field in Saje, Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria, was a part of celebrations as the school marked its 100th anniversary.
Obasanjo who served as Nigeria's head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as its president from 1999 to 2007, was the captain of the Old Boys team, scoring thrice to help them defeat teachers of the school 3-0 on Monday.
Kehinde Akinyemi, the spokesperson to Obasanjo according to reports, revealed after the game that the Old Boys had planned to change their jerseys in the second half, which was the reason Obasanjo and his teammates had donned two colours in the game.
The game witnessed by Old students of the school, as well as other dignitaries including Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, and Hakeem Akintunde, the chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) saw Obasanjo, score three goals in either half.
A week earlier, the former President had participated in current and past students of his secondary alma mater in an 18km walk.
This is not the first Obasanjo has performed in a charity fixture. In March 2022, the 85-year-old participated in a 5-aside novelty football game to celebrate his birthday, scoring twice as his side recorded a 4-2 victory.
During his second tenure as President, Nigeria co-hosted the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Ghana but, finished as runners-up after losing to Cameroon on penalties in the final.
