Nigerian stars are set to spice up top European leagues this weekend
With another weekend of exciting football ahead of us, which Nigerian stars across Europes top five leagues should catch your attention the most?
Ademola Lookman — Inter vs Atalanta
With the transfer saga surrounding Ademola Lookman now apparently over, it is time for the Nigerian forward to get back to doing what he does best, harassing defenders and banging in important goals.
Lookman could feature in his first Serie A game of the season against reigning Champions Inter, hoping to kick off his season with another important performance for La Dea.
After 17 goals and 10 assist last season, Atalanta will be hoping to see the best of Lookman once again, now that they know he is 100% committed to the club, at least for the 2024/25 season.
Alex Iwobi — Ipswich vs Fulham
With a goal to his name already after two Premier League appearances this season, Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi could be laying the foundation for a brilliant season in front of goal.
The former Arsenal and Everton star has the chance to increase his goals count this weekend when Fulham take on newly-promoted Ipswich Town, who already lost their first two matches of the season against Liverpool and Manchester City.
Fulham have faced mixed results in the league this season, beating another promoted side, Leicester City, 2-1 after losing their opening match to Manchester United.
Iwobi will be hoping to reprise his role from the game against Leicester City, and at £5.5m is also one to watch for FPL.
Moses Simon — Montpellier vs Nantes
Nantes manager Antoine Kombouare described Moses Simon as miraculous after his first goal of the new Ligue 1 season and the Nigerian has the chance to kick on from his heroics against Auxerre this weekend.
Nantes travel to Montpellier with Simon, who recently made his return to the pitch after a gruesome injury kept him out for four months, will be desperate to get back to his best form and can take another step in the right direction in the Canaries’ third game of the season.
Maduka Okoye — Udinese vs Como
Former Super Eagles number one Maduka Okoye has been in inspired form since usurping Marco Silvestri midway through last season to become Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Okoye helped Udinese stave off relegation and was rewarded with a new four-year contract for his heroics. The 25-year-old goalkeeper has already started the season well and was instrumental in Udinese’s first win of the new campaign against Lazio.
However, Okoye is yet to keep a clean sheet this season despite impressing against Bologna and Lazio, and could get the chance to do just that when Udinese host new boys, Como, this weekend.
Okoye will also be keen to impress new Super Eagles boss Bruno Labbadia, who is set to oversee his first games in charge of the Nigerian team in September and may not have his first-choice goalkeeper slot nailed down.
Victor Boniface — Bayer Leverkusen vs RB Leipzig
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is already up and running for Bayer Leverkusen this season after scoring in the DFB Super Cup win over Stuttgart and will be hoping to take his scoring boots over to the Bundesliga when his side face RB Leipzig this weekend.
Boniface endured an injury-laden campaign last season, but still managed to find the back of the net 14 times in 23 Bundesliga games and 21 times in 34 matches in all competitions.
Bayer Leverkusen will be hoping that Boniface can recapture that form again this season mnus the injury and fire them to another Bundesliga title starting with the game against Leipzig.
