Shimizu out of Brazil and Nigeria games

"We can confirm that Risa Shimizu suffered a knee injury during Japan’s 2-1 loss to Spain in their first game at Paris 2024 on Thursday 25 July," a Manchester City statement read.

"Risa will return to the City Football Academy for further assessment by the Club’s medical team."

The injury means Shimizu will miss Japan's remaining group-stage matches against Brazil and Nigeria.

Super Falcons fall short against Brazil

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Super Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Despite a spirited performance, a single goal in the 37th minute from Gabi Nunes proved to be the difference between the two teams.

The Super Falcons showed great determination and attacking intent, with Rasheedat Ajibade leading the charge.

However, despite creating several opportunities, they were unable to convert their chances. Brazil, on the other hand, capitalised on a defensive lapse to secure the win.

Next up for the Super Falcons is a clash with world champions Spain who defeated Japan 2-1 in Group C’s opener in Nantes on Sunday evening.
