Nigeria's Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has explained why the team will play the final match of the AFCONQ2025 without a key player.
Nigeria's Super Eagles are set to play their final match of the AFCONQ2025 qualifiers against Rwanda, but they will do so without a key player, Ademola Lookman.
The team recently secured their position as Group D winners after a dramatic match against Benin, where they came from behind to salvage a point.

Lookman played the full 90 minutes in that encounter, showcasing his importance to the squad but it was Victor Osimhen who stole the show with the all-important equaliser late on.
Despite the significance of the previous match, the upcoming game against Rwanda holds different stakes.
For Nigeria, it is a dead rubber, as they have already qualified for the tournament in Morocco. However, for their visitors, the Amavubi, the match is crucial.
Rwanda is still in contention for a spot in the tournament and is competing with Benin for the second qualification ticket from Group D.
This adds an extra layer of intensity to the fixture, as Rwanda will be fighting hard to secure their place.
Coach Augustine Eguavoen has made the decision to release Lookman from the squad due to his inability to perform at full capacity.
In a press conference video posted by journalist Calister, he explained that Lookman expressed he could only play at 70% due to a slight injury.
“Relationship is something that is key,” he said. “Lookman is slightly hurt, we grow a relationship and understanding as well. Based on that he was released because he said he can’t play at a 100%, only at 70% and he pleaded.”
Eguavoen emphasised the importance of maintaining good relationships with players, stating that while he could have insisted on Lookman's presence, he chose to respect his wishes for the sake of their rapport.
I am the only one who can excuse him. If I want him to stay, he will stay. But we have to keep the relationship going, so, I allowed him,” he added.
Eguavoen will now focus on solidifying his team dynamics and strategies while allowing other players to step up in Lookman's absence.
The Super Eagles aim to finish their qualifying campaign on a high note, while Rwanda will be determined to capitalise on any opportunity to secure their place in Morocco.
The clash promises to be an exciting encounter with significant implications for both teams.
