The Nigerian star was shown two yellow cards in quick succession as Fenerbahce won their first Europa League match

It was a night of mixed emotions for Nigeria's Bright Osayi Samuel as his Fenerbahce side won all three points after a 2-1 win over Union Saint. Gilloise, but the Nigerian defender was shown a red card.

Osayi, who came on as a second-half substitute for Fenerbahce was sent off after receiving tow yellow cards in quick succession, including for a penalty-causing foul in extra-time.

Goals from Calgar Soyuncu and a Christian Burgess own goal were enough to give Fenerbahce victory despite a late goal from Ross Sykes, who scored in extra time.

How it happened

With only two minutes on the clock, the away side threatened to open the scoring as Jaden Oosterwolde made a crucial clearance to deny Noah Sadiki an easy goal, before Franjo Ivanovic tested Fenerbahce’s goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, twice.

Despite a strong start from the USG, it was Fenerbahce who opened the scoring through Soyuncu’s close-range finish.

The home side went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead and came close to doubling their advantage soon after the restart, with Youssef En-Nesyri’s header cleared off the line.

The Moroccan was involved in another key moment during the game as Kevin Mac Allister was sent off for fouling him, leaving St. Gilloise with 10 men.

Fenerbahce capitalised on their numerical advantage and added a second goal in the 82nd minute when a defensive mix-up resulted in an own goal by Burgess.

However, Osayi-Samuel’s late red card gave St. Gilloise a glimmer of hope and despite Ivanovic’s penalty being saved, they still found a goal through Sykes to make it 2-1.

Despite the late scare, Fenerbahce held on to extend their unbeaten run against Belgian teams and claim their first win in Europe this season.
