Nigeria's preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup take a step further as coach Randy Waldrum reveals 23 players chosen for the finals
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have announced the final 23-person squad that will represent the country at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Super Falcons select big guns for World Cup
Two-time UEFA Women's Champions League winner Asisat Oshoala headlines the squad and will be hoping to bring a winning mentality into the squad after helping Barcelona to domestic and European success in the just-concluded season.
She will be joined by fellow LaLiga Femenino star Rasheedat Ajibade who also made the cut, although there was no room for Levante's Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene.
Falcons looking for improved World Cup performance
Head coach Randy Waldrum named a competitive squad with a range of experience, from 40-year-old captain Onome Ebi who will become the first African woman to play in six World Cup tournaments, to 21-year-old Gift Monday, who will be representing Nigeria in a major international competition for the second time.
The Super Falcons will kick off their campaign at the World Cup against reigning Olympic Champions Canada in Group B, before taking on one of the hosts, Australia, in the second group game and closing off the first round with a tie against Ireland.
They will be looking to improve on their performances at the 2019 edition of the World Cup which saw them knocked out of the first knockout stage after a 3-0 hammering by Germany.
