The journey to another Serie A top scorer award has started for Nigeria and SSC Napoli forward Victor Osimhen with compatriot Odion Ighalo leading the charge.

Ighalo was one of those who reacted as the Super Eagles forward kicked off the season as he superbly ended the last. 

Osimhen was on fire as SSC Napoli started their title defence with a comprehensive 3-1 win at Frosinone on Saturday.

Frosinone vs Napoli

The Serie A returned for the 2023/24 season with the Nigerian striker and his club in fine form at the weekend.

Napoli needed their main man Osimhen to help them dig deep to see off newly promoted Frosinone following a come-from-behind victory. 

Frosinone took a shock lead courtesy of a seventh-minute penalty by Abdou Harroui but failed to hold on to the slim lead as they were blown away by the champions.

Matteo Politano kicked off the comeback with a deserved equaliser in the 24th minute before Osimhen opened his account with a stunner three minutes from the break to give Napoli the lead at half-time.

Napoli and Osimhen had to wait till late on for the next goal which came from their Nigerian forward, who showed great awareness and movement to seal the deal with his second and Napoli’s third of the evening thanks to an excellent through pass from Giovanni Di Lorenzo 11 minutes from time.

Osimhen fans react

After the goals and win, Osimhen took to his Instagram page to react to what was the perfect start to the new season.

The 24-year-old thanked God for the goals and win with a short message that read “God is the greatest,” he posted as reported by Pulse Sports.

Some of his friends and well-wishers took to the comment section to respond led by former AFCON top scorer, Ighalo, who started counting Osimhen’s goals this season. 

Others who reacted alongside Ighalo were senior man, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Boniface, and Nigerian goalkeeping legend, Vincent Enyeama. 

Osimhen netted 26 goals last season to become the first African in Serie A history to be named the best striker in Italy.

His goals played a key role as Napoli ended a 33-year wait to lift the Serie A.
