What Osimhen said
In a clip making the rounds on social media, the Nigerian national team were seen celebrating Lookman with a cake, given that it was the first time they had gathered in the country as a unit since the Bergamo-based star won the CAF POTY.
In Osimhen's speech, the former Napoli star said, “First of all, we all know Lookman deserves this. He has been amazing for both his club and also for the Super Eagles.”
“It’s a great privilege that this award came to Nigeria and went to the most deserved person. I am proud of you. [Ademola Lookman].
“We speak in private a lot of times, and I told you how proud I am for deciding to play for the Super Eagles. Your hard work and dedication show you deserve to be the African Best.”
“I also hope it comes back to Nigeria. The likes of [Victor] Boniface, Samuel [Chukwueze], all of us.”
Osimhen won the award in 2023 for his exploits with Napoli, leading the Partenopei to a historic third Scudetto title. Lookman won for his performance for an Italian club as well, as he led La Dea to their first-ever European title.
The duo combined to give the Super Eagles the lead in the 2-0 triumph against Rwanda last week Friday. Both players would hope to be on their A-game when Eric Chelle's side host Zimbabwe in Uyo.
