Brazil outfoxed by Japan
At the Olympic women’s football tournament round 2, Japan emerged victorious over Brazil with a dramatic 2-1 win.
The first half was a tense battle with neither team managing to break the deadlock. Japanase star Tanaka had a golden opportunity to give her team the lead with a penalty in the 45+3' minute, but her attempt was thwarted by Brazilian goalkeeper, keeping the score level at halftime.
The second half saw Japan make an immediate impact. Just a minute after the break, Jheniffer, assisted by Ludmila, scored the opening goal for Brazil in the 56' minute.
Japan responded with urgency later on and equalized in the 90+2' minute. Kumagai converted a penalty to level the score after Brazil’s defence conceded a foul in the box.
As the match seemed to be heading towards a draw, Japan clinched the win with a decisive goal from Tanikawa in the 90+6' minute.
This late strike sealed the victory and ensured Japan’s spot as a strong contender in the group stage.
