The West African side produced a resilient defensive display, frustrating the world champions for the majority of the game.

However, a moment of brilliance from Alexia Putellas, who equalled Lionel Messi's record, shattered the Nigerian resistance in the 84th minute.

The Super Falcons fought valiantly for an equaliser, with substitute Chinwedu Ihezuo coming closest but unable to convert a late chance.

Despite being under pressure for much of the game, Nigeria managed to create several opportunities but failed to capitalise on the chances they created.

"We had three or four good opportunities today, regrettably, we didn't convert them.

"We had one in the first half, a breakaway for Asisat and Rash (Rasheedat Ajibade) that we missed. We had chances, regrettably, the Spanish converted theirs," Waldrum said after the 1-0 loss, per Soccer Net.

Despite the defeat, Waldrum expressed pride in his team's performance against the world champions.

"We lost to two of the best teams in the world. Spain is the best team in the world right now and Brazil are in the top 10.
